Where to buy permanent Christmas lights

There are only two channels, and which one you buy through changes the warranty more than it changes the lights.

The direct answer: permanent Christmas lights sell through exactly two channels and you cannot mix them. DIY kits — Govee, Lumary, AMURTH, EverLights' self-install line — are bought the way you buy any other product: direct from the manufacturer's own store, or from a general retailer like Amazon or Best Buy. Dealer-installed systems — Trimlight, JellyFish, Gemstone, Celebright, Oelo — are not sold as products at all. You buy them from a local licensed dealer who quotes your house, and the product comes with the installation attached. The choice between the two channels is the whole decision, because it is also the choice between a product warranty and a product-plus-labor warranty.

Channel one: the DIY kits

A DIY permanent lighting kit arrives in a box with a track, a controller, a power supply and an adhesive or clip mounting system. You mount it under your own eave, usually from a ladder, over one or two days. This is the channel most people mean when they search for where to buy.

  • The manufacturer's own store. Govee sells its permanent outdoor range directly, which is where the current model numbers and the published specifications live. Buying direct is the only way to be certain which generation you are getting, because the generation matters a great deal here — the 2 Pro, for example, publishes an IP68 strand and a cut-and-reconnect run that earlier models do not.
  • A general retailer. Lumary's Permanent Outdoor Lights Max is carried by Best Buy with the full specification published on the product page. Amazon carries most of the market, including the budget end: AMURTH's 100 ft RGB+IC kit is an Amazon-only product, and its Amazon listing is the only published specification that exists for it.
  • A specialist Christmas lighting retailer, for the DIY lines some of the professional brands run alongside their dealer business. EverLights publishes both a self-install option and a professional one, with different warranty terms attached to each.

Channel two: the dealer networks

The professional brands do not sell you a box. Trimlight, JellyFish, Gemstone, Celebright and Oelo all operate through licensed local dealers, and the purchase is a quoted project: somebody measures your roofline, specifies a color-matched channel, installs it and warranties the work. There is no price on a website because there is no product to price.

What you are buying in this channel, beyond the labor, is the channel itself and the labor warranty. A color-matched aluminum channel tucked under the eave is what makes a permanent system invisible in daylight, and it is the single biggest visual difference between a dealer install and a DIY kit. The comparison between the main dealer brands is in EverLights vs Trimlight, and the alternatives to each are in EverLights alternatives.

What the channel does to your warranty

This is the part that should decide where you buy, and it is published by every brand. Trimlight's own brand comparison collects the terms, and the pattern is identical across the market: DIY gets a product warranty, professional installation gets product plus labor.

Published warranty terms by brand and channel
BrandChannelPublished warranty
GoveeDIY, direct and retail3 years on current permanent outdoor products
EverLightsDIY self-install1 year product
EverLightsProfessional install5 years product + 1 year labor
JellyFishDealer install5 years parts + 1 year labor
TrimlightDealer installLifetime product on estimated component lifespan + minimum 1 year dealer labor
GemstoneDealer installLifetime lights, 10 years other components, 1 year labor; register within 30 days
OeloDealer install7 years; 5 years for DIY or contractor install, labor first year only
CelebrightDealer install10 years on components, transferable to a new owner
AMURTHAmazon onlyNone published that we could find

Two things are worth reading twice in that table. The first is that EverLights' own terms change by a factor of five depending on who mounts it, which is the clearest published statement anywhere of what the installation channel is actually worth. The second is that a registration requirement — Gemstone's 30 days — is a condition you can lose a lifetime warranty by missing.

What to ask before you buy, in either channel

  1. Can the run be cut to my roofline? If your eaves have gables, returns and a garage at a different height, a fixed-length track means either dark gaps or coiled excess. Govee publishes cut-and-reconnect on the 2 Pro. Confirm it for whatever you are looking at.
  2. What is the ingress rating of each part? Not just the strand. Govee publishes IP68 for the strand and Y connector and IP67 for the control box and adapter; Lumary publishes IP67 for the lights and adapter and IP65 for the control box. The weakest-rated component is the one that fails.
  3. What is the operating temperature range? Lumary publishes -4 F to 140 F. Most brands publish nothing, which is a meaningful omission in a northern climate.
  4. Is there a white channel, or is white mixed from RGB? A dedicated white emitter is what makes a track look like architectural lighting for the eleven months that are not December.
  5. Who do I call, and for how long? In the DIY channel, that is a manufacturer support line for a stated number of years. In the dealer channel it is a local business, and its own longevity is part of what you are buying.

What it costs, and why no page can tell you

DIY kits are priced as products and you can see the number before you buy. Dealer-installed systems are quoted per project — linear feet of roofline, number of stories, roof complexity, access — so the only honest figure is the one a local dealer gives you after measuring. Anyone quoting a single national price for an installed system is quoting an average, not your house.

What you can do in advance is work out your own roofline length, because that is the number every quote is built from and it is also what decides how many DIY kits you would need. Measuring your roofline is the ten-minute version, and DIY vs professional install cost sets the two channels side by side on everything other than the lights.

Common questions

Where can I buy permanent Christmas lights?

Through one of two channels. DIY kits — Govee, Lumary, AMURTH, EverLights self-install — are bought from the manufacturer's own store or from a general retailer such as Amazon or Best Buy. Dealer-installed systems — Trimlight, JellyFish, Gemstone, Celebright, Oelo — are not sold as products at all; you buy them as a quoted project from a licensed local dealer with installation included.

Can you buy Trimlight or JellyFish lights and install them yourself?

No. Those brands sell only through licensed dealers, and the installation is part of the product. The DIY equivalents are Govee, Lumary, AMURTH and EverLights' self-install line. EverLights is the one brand that publishes both options, and its warranty changes from 1 year for self-install to 5 years product plus 1 year labor for professional install.

Is it cheaper to buy permanent Christmas lights online?

Yes, substantially, because online you are buying a kit and not a kit plus a day of labor and a color-matched channel. What you give up is the labor warranty and the daylight appearance that a recessed channel provides. DIY kits publish a price; dealer systems are quoted per house, so there is no national figure to compare against.

Does buying direct from the manufacturer get a better warranty?

Not usually better, but clearer. Buying direct is the reliable way to know which generation you are getting, and generation is what determines the published ingress rating and whether the run can be cut. Govee publishes 3 years on its current permanent outdoor products regardless of where you buy it.

Are Amazon permanent Christmas lights worth buying?

Some are. Amazon carries the mainstream brands as well as the budget end, and the thing to check is whether a manufacturer specification page exists at all. AMURTH's 100 ft kit, for example, has no manufacturer spec page and no published warranty term we could find — the Amazon listing is the only published specification, which is a real difference from a brand that documents its product.
