Do Christmas light clips work with gutter guards?
Mostly no, and this is the single most common reason a clip order arrives and does not fit. Here is what works instead.

Short answer: standard gutter clips do not work on a guarded gutter, because the guard covers the front lip the clip is designed to hook. The reliable answer is shingle tabs, which wedge under the bottom course of shingles and ignore the gutter completely.
This catches people out every single year: the clips arrive, they go up to the roof, and there is nothing for the clip to grip.
Why guards break clips
A gutter clip hooks over the front lip of an open K-style gutter. A guard sits on top of the gutter and, depending on the design, either covers that lip entirely or changes its profile so that a clip cannot sit properly on it.
Either way the mounting point the product depends on is gone, and no amount of forcing changes that.

The good news in that table: foam and brush inserts sit inside the gutter channel and leave the front lip exposed, so standard clips still work. If you have one of those, you do not have this problem. It is the solid-top, helmet and mesh guards that remove the lip.
Shingle tabs: the actual answer
A shingle tab has two legs that slide up under the bottom course of shingles. Friction holds them; the tab on the front takes a C7 or C9 bulb base. No adhesive, no screws, no contact with the gutter or the guard at all.

Work on a mild day
Asphalt shingles need some flex. Below freezing they get brittle, and that is when forcing a tab cracks one.

Find the lower edge of the bottom shingle course
The tab goes under the bottom-most shingle, just above where the roof edge overhangs the gutter.

Slide the legs up with light pressure
It should go in with a firm push, not a shove. If it resists, move an inch or two along and try again — you have hit a nail or a sealed strip.

Never force one
If a tab will not go in with light pressure anywhere along a section, stop and use a different method on that section. A cracked shingle costs far more than the display.

Fit the bulb and check the line
Tabs set the bulb slightly further back from the edge than a gutter clip does. Keep the whole run on tabs so the line stays consistent.
What not to do
- Do not clip onto the guard itself. Guards are not structural for this purpose, and a clip pulling on one can lift or deform it — which is a gutter problem you have now created.
- Do not use adhesive on shingles. Removing it pulls granules off. See clips vs adhesive hooks.
- Do not nail or screw anything. Ever, but especially into fascia behind a guard system.
- Do not wedge clips into the guard's seam. It works for about a week and then a wind event redistributes your display.
The alternative if the roof is out of bounds
If you have guards, an older roof, and no safe mounting method, that is a genuine dead end for roofline lighting — and forcing it is how people damage a roof that costs thousands to repair.
A display without a lit roofline can still look excellent. Nets on the shrubs, stakes along the path, a lit wreath and one yard piece is a complete composition, and it is covered in a first display plan and hanging lights without gutters.
